Calculation Transparency: Verify Every Number

How to use ServingCalc' show-your-work feature to understand and verify every value on your Nutrition Facts panel.

Why Transparency Matters

Your Nutrition Facts label is a legal document. If FDA audits your labeling, you need to be able to explain how every value was determined. ServingCalc makes this easy by showing the complete calculation chain for every nutrient.

Click any nutrient on your generated label to expand the calculation detail. You will see three layers of information: the per-ingredient contribution (how much each ingredient contributes to this nutrient), the pre-rounding calculated value (the raw mathematical result), and the rounding rule applied (the specific FDA rounding increment with its CFR citation).

Per-Ingredient Breakdown

The per-ingredient breakdown shows exactly how much each recipe ingredient contributes to a specific nutrient. For example, expanding Sodium might show:

Salt: 2,325mg (6g at 38,758mg per 100g, divided by 24 servings) Butter: 60.6mg (226g at 643mg per 100g, divided by 24 servings) Chocolate chips: 4.3mg (340g at 30mg per 100g, divided by 24 servings) All other ingredients: combined 0.4mg Total (pre-rounding): 2,390.3mg per serving

This breakdown lets you identify which ingredients drive each nutrient value — useful for reformulation when you need to reduce sodium, increase fiber, or adjust any other nutrient.
