Factory line set length is typically 15 ft for most manufacturers. Check the installation manual for your specific model. Measure the actual one-way liquid line length from the outdoor unit to the indoor coil.
Factory-charged outdoor units include enough refrigerant for a standard 15-foot line set (varies by manufacturer). Longer line sets hold more refrigerant in the liquid line, requiring additional charge. Under-charging causes poor cooling performance, high superheat, and compressor overheating. Over-charging causes liquid slugging, high head pressure, and reduced efficiency.
Superheat measures how far above saturation temperature the suction gas is — it confirms the evaporator is fully boiling the refrigerant. Subcooling measures how far below saturation the liquid line is — it confirms the condenser is fully condensing the refrigerant. Fixed orifice systems are charged by superheat; TXV systems by subcooling.
R-22 was phased out of new equipment in 2010 and production ceased in 2020. R-410A has been the dominant residential refrigerant but faces phase-down under the AIM Act due to its high GWP (2088). R-454B (GWP 466) and R-32 (GWP 675) are emerging replacements. Both are A2L (mildly flammable) requiring updated safety standards and equipment designs.
Always weigh refrigerant — never guess. Use a digital scale accurate to 0.1 oz. Charge in liquid state for blends (R-410A, R-454B) to avoid fractionation. Allow the system to stabilize for 15+ minutes before taking superheat/subcooling readings. Verify outdoor ambient is above 65°F for cooling mode charging; manufacturer charging charts adjust targets for different conditions.
