Straight and brick-pattern installations waste about 10% of material on cuts. Diagonal (45-degree) layouts increase waste to 15% because every wall intersection requires an angle cut. Herringbone is the most wasteful at 18% — the interlocking chevron pattern produces short offcuts that cannot be reused. Always round up when ordering boxes.
Hardwood and laminate boxes typically cover 20-25 SF. Tile boxes range from 10-20 SF depending on tile size. Always check the coverage printed on your specific product box — this calculator lets you override the default with your actual box coverage for an accurate box count.
While most flooring is priced per square foot, carpet is traditionally sold by the square yard (1 SY = 9 SF). Carpet pad is also sold by the square yard — order 10% extra for seam overlap. Tack strips run the room perimeter minus doorways.
Tile installations need thinset mortar (about 0.25 lbs/SF for standard 12-inch tile with a 1/2-inch trowel) and grout (about 0.15 lbs/SF for 1/8-inch joints). Hardwood and laminate need underlayment with 10% overlap for seams, plus transition strips at each doorway (typically 3 LF per doorway).
