Most online drywall calculators ignore doors and windows entirely or mention them in footnotes. This calculator actually subtracts them. A room with 2 doors and 2 windows can have 60+ SF of openings — that is 2 fewer sheets you need to buy. Under-estimating wastes money; over-estimating means carrying extra sheets back.
4'x8' sheets are the most common and easiest to handle solo. Use 4'x12' sheets for ceilings and long runs — fewer joints means less taping and a smoother finish. 4'x10' works well for 10-foot ceilings (one sheet floor to ceiling, no horizontal seam).
Standard rectangular rooms: 10% waste. Rooms with many openings, odd angles, or bulkheads: 15%. The waste accounts for cuts around outlets, switches, and light fixtures that cannot be reused, plus inevitable measurement errors. Experienced hangers may get away with 7-8%, but 10% is the safe starting point.
Joint compound at 0.053 gal/SF covers a standard 3-coat application (tape coat, fill coat, finish coat). Screw count assumes 12" OC on field studs and 8" OC on edges per standard practice. Tape estimate covers butt joints, tapered joints, and corners. These are starting points — adjust based on your finishing level.
